Make and Gild (or Electroform) a Wooden Ring

Inspired from many films on both Youtube and instructables I decided to test electrofom a ring with copper. The thing was that I didn't want to invest in an Equipment for the electroform process. I only bought deductive paint and ask my husband to bland Electrolyte (distilled water, sulfuric acid and copper sulfate Crystals).... for the electroform process. Curious how it Went? Look in step 3

To make the ring:

Hardwood I used Ebony, Indian Rosewood, 5mm thick

pelardrill, forstner bits 16 mm (depending of the size you want)

Sander

Scrollsaw or any kind of saw

Sandpaper, I used 240-1500 grit Small fine rasp for metal Rotery tool for buffing, buffing compount Gloss varnish (optional)

To electroform:

A ring and...

Well to be honest if you want to succeed with this I recommend to look here

The thickness of the ring is 5 mm and the inner circle is 17 mm (adjust to your own thickness of your finger). Do not make the ring too thin as it then might break but if you use hard wood the ring will be pretty durable.

Drill the hole and draw the form of your ring on the Wood. Cut with saw and sand.

Make sure that you finish the inner hole before you continue to work on the final thickness and finish of the outside.

Paint your ring with conductive paint and let it dry for at least 24 hours. Cover all the other wooden areas with varnish.

I startet to test the supplies for the electroform process with a washer. Set up my plastic tank, position the copper anodes and connectet the wires to the battery and the washer. This Went very well. Whitin some minutes the washer had a fine copper layer.

So I hooked upp the wires once again, mounted the ring and nothing happend... Sooo what was wrong? If there is a specialist there and you know what I did wrong please tell me :-). You may suggest that I buy the right Equipment. Well it was a nice expiriment and I learned how to electroform metall at least.

But then I remembered that I had Gold leaf somewhere in the house.

Sand your ring with sandpaper. I started with 240 grit (400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500) and ended with 2000 grit. Mix saw dust and Wood glue and apply on your ring. Let it dry for att least 24 hours, it has to be hard Before you glid.

Put some wood glue on the upper surface and let it dry about 20 minutes.

Apply the goldleaf on the ring. If you see the Surface repeat the process once again.

I never have had a "Golden" ring Before now I have one and it wasn't expensive either :-) Now I want to do the same process with copper and silver and I'am looking foreward to it.

I hope you liked this instructal. Good luck by making your own ring.

Thank you for reading.

Have a nice day, Amaries.
