How to Make a Leather Phone Case

I had wanted to do a project with leather for a while. I finally got my hands on some really nice material and decided to give it a go.

In this Instructable, I'll show you how I made a leather sleeve for a phone. I plan to use it as a gift since it's kind of a unique piece.

I made it at TechShop.

What You'll Need

For this project you'll need the following:

  • Scrap piece of leather. You don't need much. My piece was 9" x 6".
  • Leather laces

Cut Your Pattern

For this step, I chose to laser cut my pattern in order to more precise. If you have the proper leather working tools, though, you can do this part by hand.

My laces were 3/16" wide so I laser cut 3/16" holes around the perimeter. You could also use a leather punch if you have one.

** If you'd also like to laser it, I've included the Corel Draw file that I used to laser cut my pattern.

With your pattern cut out and ready, tie a knot in one end of your lace. Being stitching it through. When you get to the other end, tie another knot and trim off any excess lace..

All done! For my first leather-working project I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. It's already given me some ideas about what else I'd like to make next!
