From Woven Textile to Wall Art
In this project, we explore how a woven textile sample can have different and more creative uses, becoming a piece of wall art. By framing this pattern, the textile transforms into a visual object with greater value and interest. The fabric is no longer just a material; it becomes a piece of art.
This type of approach opens an endless range of possibilities. Textile samples can be reimagined and applied in unusual places, creating a strong visual impact.
This instructable is about giving materials a different opportunity and turning them into art.
Supplies
Materials
- 2.5 m of 1” white ribbon
- (or any color of your choice)
- 5 m of 3/8” green ribbon
- (or any color of your choice)
- One letter-size piece of fabric
- Thread (matching the ribbons colors)
- Needle
- Frame
Tools
- Sewing machine
- Pins or clips
Keep in mind this project was done in a letter-size fabric, the materials listed are perfect for this size.
Base Preparation
Cut the base fabric to the desired size. In this case this project was done in a letter-size fabric.
Establishing Vertical and Horizontal Axis
Before cutting each ribbon, measure it against the base you will be using as a reference. This ensures precise lengths and prevents material waste. Begin by placing the central ribbon in color green, vertically and horizontally, crossing at the center of the base, forming a cross.
Diagonal Foundation
Place the contrasting color, in this case the white ribbon diagonally. Weaving them over the first green cross. During the weaving process ensure the lines and angles look proportional and are spaced evenly to mantain the desired shape.
Integrating More Diagonals
Add two more white ribbons in the opposite diagonal direction. Weaving them over and under the existing white ribbons. The vertical and horizontal green ribbon will stay under the new diagonals. However the diagonal green ribbons will be positioned over the white ribbons to lock the center diamond correctly. It is encouraged to use pins or clips at the edges of the base to keep the ribbons in place.
Expanding the Pattern
Continue adding vertical and horizontal green ribbons parallel to the initial cross. Keep weaving under and over following the established sequence to expand the pattern.
Alignment
Once the base es completely covered by the ribbons ensure they are perfectly parallel. Secure every ribbon in place before stitching or glueing the edges to de base. Finally, cut any excess ribbon and ensure it has clean edges.
Mounting
Place the finished textile sample into a frame. Be creative! Use a fun frame or a contrasting background.
